Magic carpet

Some of you may know that Genevieve, also known as Miss G. is doing her VCE which is equivalent to A levels in the U.K. I believe.  Anyone who has either done VCE or who has children who are in the throes of the VCE year will know the stress and grinding hours of study that go with the territory.

In a bid to shed a little light relief on such an intense time, the Year 12 class at Genevieve's school have a dress up as a Disney character each year just before exam time.  They raise money for charity and have some fun at the same time.
Genevieve chose to be the Magic Carpet from Aladdin.  She is very thin and figured she could pull it off and indeed she did.  My fabric stash was duly raided, nothing too precious was used and this is what she came up with.
There are armholes just under the top tassels so early morning violin playing in orchestra practise and writing could be done.
Her inspiration for the design came from here.

Genevieve used her new sewing machine (18th birthday present), for the first time with Charlotte helping solve some teething problems.  Yay for big sisters.  A fun day was had by all and I saw some other amazing costumes when I picked Genevieve up from school.

Ahh, the enthusiasm of youth, you've got to love it!

Thank you Louise!

I received a birthday package today from my lovely blog friend Louise from Ramblings of a Roachling.
I feel so spoilt and must admit to jumping around trying not to squeal when opened it up to find packages wrapped this gorgeous owl paper.
Is it o.k. for a 49 year old to squeal and jump?

Louise knows how much I love owls and she sent me this gorgeous bag/tote with oh so cute owls printed on it.

And from a a Fair Trade Company which makes me VERY, VERY HAPPY.

I love these two little owls.  One is an ornament and the other a key ring.  How cute are they?!  A green and white polka dot body and a floral tummy.  I do believe Louise can read my mind.

Owl ornament is now making friends with a duck and puppy on the window sill at the kitchen sink, so every time I do the dishes I can look at him.

Louise also sent this fridge magnet with a truly wonderful saying.

It's now on my fridge door to remind me of important things.

I am absolutely thrilled Louise sent me this book so I can learn more about the beautiful part of the world she lives in.  Hubby and I did pass through the area briefly one day over 20 years ago, but it was misty, foggy and raining and we couldn't see a thing.  We are hoping to see it on a fine day in the future.

Louise and I share of love of wildlife and nature and I now have these wonderful wildlife programmes Louise has sent me to look at and I can't wait to get started.  I love the bird foot prints and tree borders on the labels, such a lovely touch.

I've saved showing you the card 'til last because it is exquisite.

Beautiful silver sparkly swirls, flourishes diamantes and a gorgeous bird.

Thank you so much Louise for making my birthday special.  Your gifts and card are wonderful and it means so much to me that you spent the time looking for things that you knew I would love.

The next time you want to be taken on an adventure walking trails, rambling over rocks and fields, perhaps even encountering some wildlife, or even rolling down a hill, head on over to  Louise from Ramblings of a Roachling.

What happened today!

This morning I was greeted with a cup of tea, a gorgeous card and a package.
Hubby knows I love owls and during a little CBD shopping jaunt in his lunch hour, he saw these chocolate owls and bought me one.  How can I eat a chocolate owl?  He is too cute!!  And look at that lovely book all about Paris.  I'm on a mission now to find all the best shopping areas I can visit next year when we visit.  I don't need to buy, window shopping in a totally different country will be very exciting.  Now I can research eating areas, arty areas, museums......the list is endless.

Charlotte is a young lady who knows her mother well.  Would you look at this!
I just about fell off the chair laughing when I opened the envelope and inside was this.

What an awesome card, I love it.  The bit about the 'big kid' describes me well.   Oh and I love these too!
Yummy Charlotte, thank you.

My lovely sister took me out to lunch today and we had a wonderful time.  I also had the company of my gorgeous niece who was having a day off school.  My sister knows I love gardening and bought me these lovely plants.
The daisy and the lavender are cuttings from her own garden which makes them very special.  My sister and Mum like to make cards, here is the one from my sister.

It makes me think of a day at the races and hats and facinators with feathers.  Glitzy and glam.

This is Mum's card.
I love the gold scrolly bit and the butterfly with a dusting of gold sparkles.  Dad and Mum spoilt me with a gift of money which I think will go towards some craft and/or home books.

On the way home after lunch, I stopped off at a large shopping centre with a fruit and vege market and treated myself to some fresh flowers.

Ranunculus and Snapdragons, big, bold and beautiful.  The Ranunculus were priced at 3 bunches for $5.00 as apparently they were past their best (they looked good to me) and the Snapdragons were $5.00 a bunch.  BARGAIN!!

Charlotte is making dinner tonight, chicken stir fry over rice.  I think, I know there is a bottle of Champers in the fridge, so I'm set for a merry time with my gorgeous family.

I hope wherever you are and whatever you are doing, you are well and happy.
Take care,

Anne  xx

Hubby's hamburgers

My lovely hubby makes dinner for us on Saturday nights and this week he decided to make hamburgers.  We use the bread machine to make the dough using wholemeal flour and then bake the rolls/buns in the oven.  Don't they look scrumptious?!

He was very pleased with these when they came out the oven and asked me to take a photo for my blog.

The meat patties were good too.  And here is a burger just waiting to be eaten.

Homemade wholemeal hamburgers with a beef pattie, tomato sauce, cheese, (the real stuff not orange plastic squares), tomato, dill pickle, lettuce and homemade (easy cheats recipe), mayonnaise.  Much better than McD's, or HJ's.

Have a great day everyone,

A little bit Bohemian

Yesterday I had a bee in my bonnet about tidying up and rearranging my bedroom space.  I love colour and bits and pieces, especially if it has a bohemian feel.  So I put together some things I already had in my room and this is what happened.

I made the collage of images years ago.  I bought a big canvas and pinned some images I love from my many collection of magazines.  The written content is a poem Genevieve wrote about  six  years ago titled "The Midsummer's Night that was Cold", and I love it.  On the top of the tall boy is an ethnic scarf I bought a couple of years ago and had draped of the canvas elsewhere in the room.  The jewellery stands/hangers are a recent purchase from K-Mart and are chrome mug holders.  They were $4.00 each which I thought was an economical solution to a storage problem.

The little blue lidded jewellery chest I've had since I was a little girl and holds pieces I can't bear to part with.

I very proudly have on display a vase made by my Dad on his wood lathe from a Banksia spike.

A Banksia spike or more commonly called a cone, looks like this.
Image found here http://geographelandcarenursery.mysouthwest.com.au/Nursery%20List/Banksia%20grandis
When I was very small, I remember a little night lamp that Mum used occasionally.  A number of years ago I saw one just like it in an antique store.  I decided not to spend the money on it although I was yearning for it.  My lovely sister who was with me at the time bought it for me.  It was so very sweet of her.
Mum recently gave her the one from home, so we now have one each.  Childhood memories, so special.

This little owl coin purse was a gift and as I love owls, it has to be displayed.
I think he sits very well propped against Dad's Banksia vase and a bottle of perfume.

My lovely sister-in-law gave me this four leaf clover she found which she framed and gave me as a birthday gift nearly 11 years ago.  It's so very special to me.

This is now a very special place in my bedroom with colour, memories and things that mean a lot to me.    I also have a small photo of my best friend from when I was twelve years old.  It was taken when we were in our early 20's.  It's very sad that she is so very busy with her career and living in another state, so we don't share quite the same relationship we once had.  Despite that, this photo is a reminder of those happy times we had, and perhaps if and when she is able, we can once again share happy times.

Friendship is one of the most valuable things we can have in life.  So to the many friends I have made since starting this blog, thank you so much for making time for me.  It means the world to me.

I'd like to share Genevieve's poem with you.  Every time I read it, it gives me tingles.  I hope you enjoy it.

Take care,

Anne  xx

THE MIDSUMMER'S NIGHT THAT WAS COLD

Once a year when Midsummer’s night comes
And welcomes the moonlight to glow
When the frogs croak a rhythm to the dragonflies’ dance
To the oceans the rivers do flow.

And the pale white roses that sway in the breeze
Seem to close up and rise to the light
And to accompany the moon, the fire-flies sing
This is what happens on Midsummer’s night.

But once it was dark at midnight of midsummer
When the rays of the moonlight were cold
And the dances of the dragonflies just were not right
And the roses felt stiff and felt old

There came a time when the ripples just were, and
All happiness they seemed to smother
They were just there, just there, just there
With cold indifference they followed each other

That night, the fire-flies, instead of glowing
Retreated and did not come out
Those wee little candles were tucked away, and so
Their beautiful singing did not come about

On this night, the leaves that swathed the great flowers
Had to help; there was one thing to do:
They became dresses for the stems and they shielded
And curtained their flower from view

The owls that came swooping one night every year
Were usually forthcoming and cheery
This time they were silent, swooped once and were gone
And they left it so bleak and so dreary

The poison ivy that twined around the big trees
Desperately clung to and clutched the bark
To save it's own skin or the tree’s is not known
But it certainly left it’s own mark

The snowbells and Bluebells that usually chimed
Sat unmoving and silent all through
What would normally have been a time of celebrating
But never at all did they move

Then the call sounded loud to let every one know
That for another whole year it was over
That Midsummer’s night was once again gone
And the first to break the silence was the clover

She sang soft and sweetly and diminished the moon
And the first whispers of dawn came to
The ears of those who had long wished to hear it
In the sky came streaks of orange, then blue

But the dawn was well on its way
So the blackness relinquished its hold on the world
Into the west it slunk away

So once more at Midsummer when the dragonflies dance
The frogs must croak their rhythm before
Midnight, when the moonlight will blind them so brightly
It was once cold but is not any more.

My week

Hello everyone.  Before I start, I should warn you this will be a photo heavy post, so if you are running short on time, you might want to tune out now.  I'd love it if you'd stick around though 'cos I've have some gorgeous photos to share.

First up we have the adorable Stripey who continues to give our family much pleasure.  I never cease to be amazed at the interesting ways they sit.
From the other side.
Yesterday I had some visitors of the feathery kind.  I have posted photos of these parrots before, but they are so beautiful I couldn't resist sharing more.

Sitting on the pergola
Together
We also had some Rainbow Lorikeets visit too.  While I love their beautiful colours, I don't welcome them because they are aggressive, very destructive and chase the more tame and gentle King Parrots away.
Adult male and female Rainbow Lorikeets have the same colour plumage
We are off out into the garden now for a bit of a tour of what's been happening which is rather a lot now that spring is here and we are welcoming sunny days and warmer temperatures.
I've planted some of these carrots.  They look kind of cute with their little round shape.

The Cinerarias are flowering in colours that make me very happy, bright and bold.

Pansies, Primula (just about finished now), Polyanthus, Sweet William and Alyssum.
Alyssum, Sweet William and Campion and Fuschia coming into bud.

Stripey decided to join me in the sunshine.  Just after I took this photo, he decided to roll on the garlic I have planted under the Roses.  He was shooed away very quickly.

Tree Fern fronds unfurling towards that gorgeous blue sky.
Sunlight on some other Tree Ferns in the backyard.
Liquid Amber not yet in leaf.  I took this photo to show the contrast of the grey/brown branches against the beautiful blue.
The ornamental grapevine coming into leaf under the pergola which will give us lovely summer shade.
These lovely yellow flowers come from the following crimson/green succulent, of which I don't know the name.

While looking at some other succulents I have planted in a tub, I discovered the little fern trying to share soil space.  Some of the fern spoors must have taken a liking to this spot.

While walking around I spotted something else flowering brightly and discovered a Cyclamen in flower.  Such a pretty colour it is amongst the greenery.

One last photo (phew), an update on my painting.  I worked on the arms (forearm is a bit sinewy and thin, hand (thumb needs to be longer), defining the neck and improving the skin colour.  The face is still not the right colour and I just had to add some hair to the head as I was most disconcerted to be painting around an egg head.  Her hair is up and away from her face in a messy bun, so that's why I've painted it short.

Well that's it for now.  Have a wonderful weekend whatever you are doing.
