Easy rustic Christmas baubles

I guess it might be a bit early to be getting in the Christmas spirit, but I fancied making some baubles for the girls to hang on the handle of their bedroom doors.  This little project is super easy, super fast and completed in about 10 - 15 minutes.  I called it rustic 'cos there's no sewing involved and lots of frayed edges.  I'm sure someone, somewhere has done something similar before but I thought I'd share anyway.
Materials
fabric (a fantastic way to use up scraps)
narrow ribbon
rats tail (don't know the proper name or even if their is one)
sewing pins or a hot glue gun
scissors
poly styrene foam balls

Miss C. and Miss G. chose two fabrics they liked.  You could use more than two of course depending on the size of the foam balls you are using.  Measure the circumference of the foam ball (the ones I used were about 16cms).  I was guessing here so I cut a strip of fabric from both fabrics measuring 18cm x 6cm.  From each of these I made 4 strips of torn fabric for wrapping around the bauble.
Miss G's choice.
Start  wrapping the fabric strips around the foam ball.  I secured the overlapped strip at the top with a sewing pin.  If you have a hot glue gun, I'm sure you could use that to secure the fabric instead.  As I don't have one, this is what I came up with.
Continue wrapping strips of fabric around the foam ball in alternating fabrics making sure each strip overlaps the previous one.
When the foam ball is completely covered and secured, cut two pieces of ribbon to wrap around the foam ball and secure on the top and bottom with sewing pins or glue.  I used two different coloured ribbons.
Cut a piece of rats tail and secure on the top of the foam ball, yes, with another sewing pin.
Tie a small bow and then knot the top of the tail to make a loop to hang over a door handle.
Hang on the door.
Miss C's fabric choice.
I'm sorry about the quality of this photo, the lighting was bad.
I hope you are having a lovely weekend.

  1. Hi
What a lovely idea and so pretty I might just have to try this. Just come across your blog from Rubies Place I will be re-visiting.
Love from a very dull and wet Devon countryside in England.
