Magic carpet

Some of you may know that Genevieve, also known as Miss G. is doing her VCE which is equivalent to A levels in the U.K. I believe.  Anyone who has either done VCE or who has children who are in the throes of the VCE year will know the stress and grinding hours of study that go with the territory.

In a bid to shed a little light relief on such an intense time, the Year 12 class at Genevieve's school have a dress up as a Disney character each year just before exam time.  They raise money for charity and have some fun at the same time.
Genevieve chose to be the Magic Carpet from Aladdin.  She is very thin and figured she could pull it off and indeed she did.  My fabric stash was duly raided, nothing too precious was used and this is what she came up with.
There are armholes just under the top tassels so early morning violin playing in orchestra practise and writing could be done.
Her inspiration for the design came from here.

Genevieve used her new sewing machine (18th birthday present), for the first time with Charlotte helping solve some teething problems.  Yay for big sisters.  A fun day was had by all and I saw some other amazing costumes when I picked Genevieve up from school.

Ahh, the enthusiasm of youth, you've got to love it!

New cushion cover

Yesterday I had the urge to make something on the sewing machine and decided on a new cushion cover for one of the many cushions that sit on my bed.  The current covers are 12 years old, so I think a change might be needed.  I chose some fabrics from my stash and came up with this.

The reverse side of the cushion is made from this large polka dot fabric which I love as much as the front fabric.

I decided I would hand sew the buttonholes.  Although I can do it on my machine, it's difficult and I rather like sitting down doing something by hand.  I chose some pretty buttons from my stash to complete the cover.

The machine sewing is not great close up as I had a problem with the needle.  I didn't realise that part of the point had broken off and wondered why the fabric kept pulling.  After I changed the needle, all was well.

Have a wonderful day,
