ANZAC Day centenary

As we commemorate the centenary of ANZAC Day on the 25 April 2015 in Australia, I would like to take the time to remember two of my ancestors who served during WWI.

Edmund Scottick Charles Chandler is my paternal grandfather and he joined the armed forces in 1916, embarking from Adelaide, South Australia.  He served in Egypt with the 10th Light Horse Regiment and during this time visited Jerusalem.  Our family has some photos from this time which I would like to share with you.

Edmund Charles Scottick Chandler

This photo was taken in Jerusalem where Grandad and his mates had a picnic under the trees.

My grandfather is on the right.

My great uncle, Claude Spencer Williams is brother-in-law to Edmund and my Granny's brother.  Claude joined the armed forces in 1916 and spent his active service time in France attached to 23rd Howitzer, 10th Battery as a gunner.  He was fortunate to escape serious injury during conflict, however after going on leave in England at the end of the war, he contracted and became ill with the Spanish flu on his return to France.  Sadly, Claude subsequently died as a result of this illness and is buried in Sous-le-Bois, France.  His war memorial plaque is at the Maubeage cemetery, Sous-le-Bois.

Photo Scavenger Hunt - February 2015

It's time once again for the monthly Photo Scavenger Hunt.  Thank you Greenthumb at Made With Love blog for organising this fun blog activity.

Flowers

Something a little different, a female cucumber flower.

Love

This photo encapsulates the word love beautifully on many different levels for me.  The love I have for my farming brother (love him to bits), the love I have for the farm where I grew up in Western Australia, the love of fresh milk, non homogenised and non pausteurised milk, the love of recycling - using an old tractor seat and turning it into a milking stool.....

Number

Birthday invitation.

Something beautiful

Our beautiful daughters Genevieve and Charlotte.
Favourite colour

Green in all its shades.

Bird

My lovely cousin in England knows how much I love owls and made this handsome one for me.

On the road

With Louise of Ramblings of a Roachling blog in 2012.  Somewhere in Staffordshire or maybe Derby county.  Louise?

Tap

The tap on the gas meter, very boring.

Price

The price of the book below found in an op shop.

 Heart

A garden ornament I made a couple of years ago.

 A corner of your home

In the lounge room.
 Whatever you want

Our three animals showing a definite interest in the dinner plate being removed from the table.  So funny but so very naughty.

Looking forward to seeing what scavenging we will be doing for the March list.

Visiting Somers

Tuesday last week while our relatives were here we decided to go for another day trip to a very special place, the seaside town of Somers.  The reason it's special is because hubby and his four siblings grew up there when it was very small and not home to the wealthy who have holiday houses there now.   We decided to have lunch at the Somers General Store Cafe which use to be, no surprises here, the town general store.  Hubby and three of his siblings had jobs there during school holidays when they were in their teens so there was a goodly amount of reminiscing between hubby and his sister about what use to go on.  It was lovely to hear their tales while we ate a delicious lunch.

Hubby use to dispense petrol from these bowsers and was very happy they have been retained for nostalgic reasons.  We loved the couch grass growing up into the glass.

I loved the decor inside the cafe which was boho and eclectic.  I loved these cushions on the seat where we ate our lunch.

Hubby has reluctantly allowed me to post this photo of us which I adore.  He is rather internet shy when it comes to photos.

After lunch we went for a stroll on the beach which is just across the road from the cafe.  It was lovely and calm, perfect for a little dipping of feet in the water.

Looking toward Phillip Island between the trees.

Phillip Island in the distance which is about 5 miles across the water from Somers.

The path down to the beach.

Coastal flora.

Philip Island on the horizon.

Looking up toward the path down to the beach.

Colourful seaweed.

Hubby took this photo.

We came across this unusual sculpture on another path back to the road.

And this carving of a koala made from a dead tree.

We did go for a walk through a reserve for koalas in the area but unfortunately didn't see one.  Maybe next time.  All in all we had a lovely day and hope that we can get down to this lovely spot on the Mornington Peninsula again soon.
